Old Exeter Ministry of Defence site

a photographic visit in 2005, during the early days of digital photography

(photographs taken with a 4.1 megapixel sony cybershot)

i discovered this area in 2005 when I lived and worked in Exeter, UK

at the time i didn't know what the area was (or had been) but i thought it was an interesting location for some urban photography

longer-time locals informed me that the area had been a ministry of defence site at one time

though its decommission date remains a mystery to me

these maps (© google maps) show the progression of recent development on the site:

this was when i took the photographs

the site is intact but derelict

(the M25 motorway is visible on the right of the image)

clearance of the site has left only traces of the sheds

the area as it is at the time of writing:

a new residential commuter development

that has sprawled beyond the bounds of the original site

it even has its own train station

the grey February landscape adds to the desolation

and the dilapidated structures quote the leafless trees

although there is a backdrop of tranquil homeliness visible in places

on a return visit the winter sun provided cold light

the place had its own beauty

i was inspired enough to attempt a series of paintings based on the structures there

(although in the event i only managed to produce one - oil on board 100 x 80cm, 2005)
